Accelerated Reader is changing! In the past all students within each grade level were required to have the same number of points to receive AR rewards and to meet the grade level goal. This school year, students participating in Accelerated Reader, will have individual reading ranges, called ZPDs, and individual point goals based on their performance on the STAR reading assessment test. Your child will have a different point goal and ZPD for each of the 9weeks of school.
How will SGA implement AR?
-
Individualized student goals based on STAR - focus on growth vs points
-
Walls of Fame - When a student reaches 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of their AR goal with an average correct of 85% or higher, their name will be placed on the Wall of Fame and they will receive a prize in the Media Center.
-
Students will receive an AR Ticket for achieving 100% on an AR test.
-
At the end of each 9 weeks, students who reached their AR goals, will receive a special treat at lunch.
-
An AR picnic will be held on May 20th. The picnic will be to recognize those students who reached at least three of their four AR goals and/or showed substantial reading growth on their STAR test.
-
Students in grades three through five will be required to keep a reading log and or reading notebook.
Parents you can monitor your child's AR progress and the results from tests on books using the "Home Connect" feature in Accelerated Reader. Remember, parents and teachers are the key motivators and are essential to the success of the program. Please encourage your child to read daily and help them to develop and maintain the love of reading. A Student Accelerated Reader Report will be sent home along with Progress Reports

The B.U.G. club stands for Bring Up Grades. The purpose of the club is to encourage students in grades 3 through 5 to show academic improvement. When a student brings up half of all grades from one 9 weeks to the next, he/she will become a B.U.G. Club member. B.U.G. Club members are rewarded for their academic accomplishment every Wednesday from 2:25 p.m. until 2:40 p.m. with a trip to the Media Center. Their time in the Media Center is full of fun activities for our students. Students enjoy board games, computer games, talking to friends and an occasional craft.
Work hard and become a B.U.G. Club member!!

Cub of the Month
S.G.A. Elementary has a character/positive behavior trait of the month incentive. Each month of school there is a different character education/positive behavior trait, which is discussed with the students. Each month students are asked to privately vote on which student exemplifies the monthly character quality. The winner from each homeroom has a special lunch with our principal, Sam Adkins. The winners are treated to a lunch on stage along with a special dessert. They all receive a certificate and a "Pawsitively SGA's Best" button. One student from each grade level is selected by teachers to receive a "PAWsitively SGA's Best" t-shirt from Planter's Electric and their picture is placed in the newspaper. A picture is taken of students from each homeroom and their picture is posted on the character education bulletin board in the front hall.
