Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports
PBIS is a school-wide intervention for behavior. It is also a state initiative and has been an important component of the Race to the Top plans nationwide. When all 10 parts of PBIS are successfully implemented, it has been very effective in improving student behavior, decreasing discipline referrals, improving academic performance, improving staff morale and retention, and improving general school climate. All of the Burke County Schools are implementing PBIS, including the transporation department.
PBIS is a school-wide initiative that includes all employees at SGA Elementary. During the months of August and September, the Counselor, along with the teachers are rolling out our PBIS program, (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports). We are reminding our students of our school wide expectations. Our four main areas of expectations are in the classroom, hallway, restroom, and cafeteria. Students can earn paw points for good behavior and then cash them in two times a month at our school store (Bear Bin). At the end of each nine weeks grading period, students who have five paw points or satisfactory behavior are rewarded with a variety of different fun activities.
