Curriculum and Instruction

Dr. Frances Young, the district Curriculum Director, has worked in the Burke County School District for the past twenty eight years as a teacher, lead teacher, and assistant principal for instruction.  She coordinates the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the instructional program including all academic/ exploratory/ media/ guidance/ enrichment/ gifted and remedial programs.  Dr. Young also monitors and collaborates with teachers and administrators to provide the highest quality instruction for Burke County students.

Each year I become more convinced that the one thing that has the greatest impact on student success is a competent caring teacher. Recently, much of our dialogue and planning has focused on the Georgia Performance Standards.  In this effort, Burke County Schools have begun to employ the use of Learning Focused Strategies (LFS).  We approach the entire endeavor with a sense of excitement and a desire to rise to the occasion.  In this process, our students will be deeply engaged in rigorous learning, critical analysis, debate, research, synthesis, problem solving, and reflection.  Simply put, the educators of Burke County are deeply committed to planning and delivering instruction using exemplary practices.

To maintain success, the office of Curriculum and Instruction will continue to analyze how we are doing; support the achievement of all students and ensure that the teachers have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide proficient instruction, support, and services needed to produce improved student outcomes.  Reaching toward this mission will allow us to close achievement gaps and lead the state in improving student achievement.

I look forward to working with you as we promote student success.  We will all be strengthened by this journey as we maximize our instructional time.

Happy Teaching and Learning,

Dr. Frances V. Young

There are really
only three types of people:
those who make things happen,

those who watch things happen, and those who say,
What happened?

Which one are you?  Take it and make it happen for students...
