FoodCorps

MISSION
Together with communities, FoodCorps serves to connect kids to healthy food in school.

VISION
We are creating a future in which all our nation’s children regardless of race, place, or class know what healthy food is, care where it comes from, and eat it every day. Through our work, future generations will grow up to lead healthier and more productive lives.
THREE AREAS OF SERVICE
Our AmeriCorps leaders deliver the FoodCorps program in high-need schools, focusing on three evidence-based strategies that get children eating healthy:

Hands on Learning Hands-On Learning:
Students grow, cook, and taste new foods, which builds their skills and changes food preferences.

HEALTHY SCHOOL MEALSHealthy School Meals:
The cafeteria experience steers students towards the healthiest options and gets them excited to try new healthy foods.

SCHOOLWIDE CULTURE OF HEALTHSchoolwide Culture of Health:
As a whole, the school community and environment from hallways to classrooms to cafeteria to grounds celebrates healthy food.

FoodCorps is part of the AmeriCorps National Service Network

Community Collaborations

The goal of collaborations is to bring individuals, agencies, organizations and community members themselves together in an atmosphere of support to systematically solve existing and emerging problems that could not easily be solved by one group alone.

Free Virtual Field Trips!!

Hello Educators,
This month students at WPS and Burke County Middle will be able to participate in 3 Virtual Field Trips. I have attached both posters for any teachers that may be interested in signing their class up.

Should you desire to participate please send me an email so that I can add you to the google class and send the registration invitation and google meeting link. This event will be added to your calendar and you can join from your class at the designated time. Teachers will be provided with activities per grade level before, during and after as an extension. This is considered an educational field trip and all information along with activities align to the state standards.

For additional information see below or reference the attachments.

Dairy Council Mobile Dairy Tour
is the original “farm to school” program in California, bringing the farm experience to students to teach agricultural literacy since the 1930s.

The virtual tours are guided by a Mobile Dairy Classroom instructor and are 45-minutes, teaching students about farm life while covering a variety of lessons. Each tour provides an introduction to dairy cows to teach students the anatomy of a cow, the journey of milk, milk production and more. Each lesson also takes students on a virtual tour of a working California dairy farm where students have an opportunity to engage with a dairy farmer. As they explore the farm, students will see how dairy cows are fed and milked, learn how farmers care for their herds, and discover the numerous sustainability measures farms utilize in addition to traditional upcycling practices. Each farm tour concludes with an interactive Q&A session, which provides students with the opportunity to ask questions.

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing many students and school communities to continue distance learning, our virtual field trips are an amazing opportunity for students to experience an unforgettable farm tour field trip. And best of all, they’re free!

Virtual School Garden Field Trip
On April 27, hundreds of schools across the country are anticipated to participate in “Growing School Gardens”, a virtual school gardens tour and educational broadcast event .
Growing School Gardens: Seeding a Healthy Future for Our Youth. Created by the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation in partnership with the School Garden Support Organization (SGSO) Network.

This first-ever national event will connect school gardens, educators and students across the country and is hosted by kids for kids! (Think virtual school assembly!) The broadcast will include lesson extensions, opportunities to engage with the greater school garden community while also entering for a chance to win some support for your garden!
