Tyler Torek gives an overview of Google Meet, highlighting options that useful to teachers during synchronous instruction. Lynda Moore shows where a Google Meet recording lands in Google Drive, how to download a copy for editing, and how to upload it in place of the original recording.

so today we want to talk a little bit about Google meet and kind of you know school starting next week and we and many teachers are there using Google me to record themselves giving instruction but now built Bill probably be many of them will be using Google meet to actually conduct some synchrony learning or live learning and instruction we want to caution teachers to make sure that they set up these scheduled Google meets using the Link in the header of their Google classrooms like this one shown here you can watch yesterday about the difference between yesterday's video I think it was yesterday what we talked about them between this meeting and a calendar meeting and if you share that calendar meeting link the student can get into it anytime they want to even if you're not there so don't schedule your live synchronous instruction using the getting ideas from Google Calendar make sure you use them from the Google classroom and you can leave that visible there in Google Classroom without turning it off because the student not get into that meeting unless the teacher is present when did you have any comments about what I just said I don't okay I took some snapshots of Google meet hard to demonstrate Google me when you're recording on Google me or when you're in the live meet because it won't show all the tools that are available to you to run the meeting so this is me and of course it if this is the first time you enter Google meet the computer will ask you for permission to use your microphone and Camera you don't have to have a microphone and camera but it sure does help with instructions specially that microphone and the school that the district leadership they want you to share your presents on their they watch you if you have a charity you should camera be that's a big part of relating to your student and you know just building those relationships with students so that's important is good by the way gomitas releasing a features coming soon where you'll be able to blur the background of your office or classroom or wherever you're giving the presentation from so you can see what's in my office right here but either will be a feature that to blur that the next whoops did I just close that no idea that the next one here is a this is a snap shot of what comes up as soon as I eat students don't need this information because it's all in the header link so I'll just skip over this here's me clicking I think I clicked on the side panel in Google meet where it shows all the people listed and there's there's two people listed and the chat box on the chat box is good when participants don't have a microphone and they want to enter in a question or or if you need you drop a link or something that you want to share with them is very useful we use the chat box to drop a link to our peardeck slide so the participants could follow along and even vote and answer questions yeah yeah yeah that's right and she put in the joint code in the chat box we the students could have our own whiteboard and Linda the teacher could see what we were riding on our whiteboard in her class so the chat box is very useful for sharing hyperlinks and stuff like that hearsay here's a picture that I took of a student actually clicked on the student and the arrow next to the student see there's no are there but then when I click on the student's name this little parrot or whatever drop down arrow shows up and it gives me three icons push pin is for pushing her or posting the students video on my screen so I don't see any that's like if I want to keep Google meet from jumping to somebody else who is talking I can force my screen to be on that student that may not be useful for you as a teacher but a student may want to see that and by the way here's a tip if it's student if you're sharing your screen with a student and the student says I can't see your screen all I see is your face they may have accidentally push the push pin on your face and Frozen that or made that screen visible and and therefore Google won't show them what you're sharing so you might tell him to unpin your face off of their screen and they just need cover their mouth over your face and that push panel. It'll be nice dark and green and they can push it to uncheck that box and then it'll free up Google meet to look at whatever you're sharing there's a picture of a micro but if you need some muta student you can mute them you just click on that and meet the student and then this little this is why I don't know what would you call that Linda what is that symbol dismiss symbol the remote that's the universal symbol for do not enter her something that you'll kick the student out of the meeting and as of today I found out that the stew can't come back into the meeting for a. Of time I don't know how long that. Of time is but I did it this morning with this student I kicked him out of the meeting they weren't allowed back into my Google Classroom meeting and then maybe an hour later I started the same Google class meeting from my Google Classroom header and that student was allowed to enter my meeting so that's good we don't want to permanently keep them out of our Google class I just don't know how many minutes have to go by before the student can come back in student something you feel like you are prison now so it shows you talkin at the bottom but it also shows the screen that you're sharing so we can actually 10 that screen and make the teacher screen bigger which is a really good idea for students to be able to do especially if you're trying to show them something on that has less distracting so if they attend the presentation screen it's a very good idea that's right that's right but it's really going to we're going to have to ask hard to teach her students to put in those things because of our presents and we're just giving them auditory instruction in the classroom right here's me you'll see I've needed the student I clicked on the mute icon in and it gave them a red icon right there if they need if they need to unmute them self I can't unmute them they have I need themselves and that would be done right here at the bottom of the screen where the microphone icon is the student will have to click on that and selves when you're teaching and you're ready to teach you need to present your screen you hover your mouse over the bottom you click on the present now but and then you'll have options to share your entire screen the window or just across the reason why they give you these other two option instead of your entire screen is cuz you may have some personal or private sensitive student data up somewhere on your your computer and you don't want to share that entire screen but if I don't have anything up like I recommend you do the entire screen for your students and this is what happens immediately after you push share your strength you get a pop-up window cuz you're not sure and yet and you have to tell Google meet what what exactly is your screen now if you had two monitors connected to your computer you'll have two screens pop up here you actually have to click on the picture of your screen and the button will turn blue like this I've clicked on the picture and it'll say share and then you this is extra step that people that are new to Google meet they're not ready for this or they don't understand it I got one with one more thing you got to actually select your screen and then push the blue button and then I get a windows that looks like this after they get here you can ignore this have you see up here in the right hand corner of my screen right here the tab has turn red with a record button I'm not recording but it's just showing me that that's alive meeting capturing my eyes my my voice and my video even if you don't have a camera still going to turn right up here to let you know that it's live but from this point what you need to do is open the tab up or have the tab ready for what you're instructing so I pulled up a ademo tab right here a teacher made this is a virtual classroom that I made and and so I pull that up and you can see that the tab right next to it still has that red icon which means I'm in alive meeting and I'm showing and you can see at the bottom it says you're sharing your screen I'm showing this virtual classroom to my students right now I've got two indicators that the red icon and the the blue button at the bottom of the screen and then one more thing I want to show you it's a menu I did not show when I was getting into the meeting but the three dots right here bring up some other options I can record the meeting students I need to play back later or post a copy or just keep a copy of it so that's where you find the record button and also this is important one right here turn on captions if you have any students speak another language at home they may appreciate or where they have a disability they're hard of hearing they may appreciate the fact that you turn on closed caption and Google will translate or take your audio and put the words up on the screen of fact I can do that right now in this meeting let me let me do that want to turn on closed captions so I turned it on set have been turned on and see if it's actually working okay so I'm I'm sharing my screen still and Allied lost this because I forgot what program out showing from Cilla I'm showing the window right here but is it still showing my captions on my screen it's not then work like I thought it would stuff I've seen him now at the bottom of the screen when I switch programs when I see whatever this thing closed caption comments on it's not letting me all right no problem I just we'll just go on from here I'm going to turn those closed captions off and Linda will you talk a little bit about recording in Google meet and what to do after you're done recording how that stop presenting and I'm going to start presenting so what are the things that makes me so amazing is that is that you can depending on how your meeting is it takes just a minute what you're going to get is we still down you're going to get this great little email right here and this it has arrived in your dry now we can click on this email and why did is it going to take me to that recording and you can share it here you can organize it in your drive but really you don't need to organize it in your you could share it if I wanted to share it I think this one is just shared with me and Tyler but you could easily share it from there but the one of the other really great thing is that if I go back to my job and I go I scroll down a little bit I have a nice folder that's called meat recording so if I click on that folder not only do you get an email saying that your video is ready but you also get a a video of I mean the video and it also gives you a tax transcript log write the checks so if you miss a question from a student or you know for whatever reason it kind of organized is it pretty good about taking videos that are really want to and I need them to other places in this one since I make a copy of them sometimes I don't but you can always find them in Meet recordings if you choose not to move them keep recordings folder that's made by Google you don't have make that yourself it's all right and so what I did was let's see I made sure that I made it a different color so I can always quickly find it and it's always going to be named Dimitri I really like that feature for being able to keep up with all of the chats from the students or the videos or just kind of making sure that we know we've got it in case we want to share it out or whatever with the students if you choose to take attendance just by having them chat in the Box to say hello and that that counts as their attendance to the meeting that's one way to do it 10 minutes now Tyler was telling us about manage so tell you when I mean I'm I can I can sometimes there's a video that I'm I'll make like in this one on if I want to blur out something like I'll go back from after this meeting is done and I'll blur out the meeting IDs that I'm going to that I showed from Google Calendar so that nobody watching the video can use that ID to get into a meeting they're not supposed to be in if you need to clip something out of your video mistake or something you can actually download the video into your computers editing software whatever it is like Windows Movie Maker which is free if you have Windows 10 you can get that for you can delete that part of the video and then you can upload it right here upload the new version back where it was and it won't change the sharing links to it so if you've already shared that video somebody you have to reach share the he just upload the new version that you edited from your computer it's great I think so I guess show them how you download the video to your computer do you know just because there's no but if you want to download the video you can click is it is it going to download right here you'll see that it's downloading right here now one of the reasons that you told to put it on YouTube you have to download it not that you're going to put your Google but right here is the video because it takes up space and it's already in Google Drive how do you edit with Camtasia like Dido does Camtasia open it in Google Drive or do you have to download it to my editing I have to download it all right yeah and I just in case you don't have it on your computer if you have Windows 10 on your computer you can get Movie Maker 10 for free from the Microsoft store if you just Google Microsoft Movie Maker Windows 10 first link that pops up will be the download button to get it for free so you can put that on your computer and edit clip out what you don't want out of that video you know that kind of thing I mean not nothing
