During this hour, Lynda Moore and Tyler Torek provided an overview of Google Classroom.

there's two ways to get to Google Classroom my favorite ways to just go to Google and open the app launcher which is like the waffle grid to some people and click on that that way but other ways just to type in the link classroom google.com and that will take you to your dashboard if you don't have any classes now you can add them by going up to the plus sign in the upper right hand corner and trading that class you come up here create a class by the way if you don't have the trait class is because Google thinks that you're a student and we can fix that for you so you let me know if that's missing there but you will create a class and you know you'll just make up a name a section you know you could do I don't know you don't have to put any of this other stuff just the name is required someone a crate that class not take a second why Google why Google is working it's actually creating to other things in Google Wallet spreading this class right here it just made a folder in my Google Drive called with the name of that class face off I go to classrooms there it is right there under my classroom folder so it just traded that folder course there's nothing in the all there yeah but that's where all these student assignments will be parked when they start turning in their work and it also created in my G Suite account under called with that name there it is right there so I could turn the sinus do dates and stuff will show up here and black I can change the color if I want to to something else and I can turn it off and make it visible if I need to answer how to get students to join your class you want to there's two ways to do that I'm going to jump over here to well I guess the easiest way to get students to join what does class code right here on my screen I can enlarge that by clicking on this display right there icon and I can make it even bigger if I click on that icon again I can go full-screen with it like if I wanted to put it on my Promethean board or such if that's class code is too hard for the students you can't edit that and we'll show you that where you can do that just a minute but this is the Yeezys Play It Again students join your class the other way to get stickers is there a way to get people to join your class is to click on the people and then right here under the plus sign as you can add them the only problem with doing it this way is that if I if I type the speed his name and invite them they're not actually in my class until they open up email or their Google classroom and they join my class let me show you what it looks like from what time are you can just invite me and I'll join okay all right call. randlett song let's share your screen and look to see what it looks like from your dashboard now okay okay before you join it so I'm going to share my screen y'all I'm going to go to classes can you see my screen is this the one you just did tell her that but that's a good one to join the other one I haven't joined either one so this one it's asking me to be a teacher is his your body to teach this class so I get to accept this I'm in over here you'll see that I'm going to join well hold on yeah I joined this one and then if I go back up to classes in the dashboard I can join as a student for this and then learn from Tyler's perspective you'll be able to see that it's highlighted yep yep Linda let's stop now and why don't you show them some of the set in bus in the dashboard and in the class there's two settings Pages than let's show them what they can do in the settings to where I'm a teacher which is this one okay so with as as I am a teacher in this one I'm going to go over here first so in settings there's lots of choices so one of the things that is a super great for me is is I name a class and then I decide I want to change the name of the class I can do that and all of this stuff like Tyler said is not necessary and I normally don't put it because I want a pretty header but remember how Tyler was talking about the class code so here is a customer is complicated I can reset his code so if I reset it what happens if you'll notice is regenerated and then I can display and make it larger and then again larger but a lot of times you can just reset the code you can also disable it so that students aren't allowed to join the other setting that's very useful the in the Stream only teachers can post or comment now in my opinion this is a very important setting because I don't trust my high-school students to give them the opportunity to post or to come until I have instructed them on what's allowed and what's not allowed so I actually start my class off like this only teachers can post and comment as I teach them the rules I can go in and then give but I don't allow that like on the first day because I don't trust my kids but you can go in and change this at any time as you want so the other setting is you can show class work on stream or not and y'all this is really important because you can hide the notification which means that everything goes to classwork tab you can show condensed notifications or you can show attachments and details and 4 minutes how are can I just do this real quick and show a place undertale and I click on say what's going to happen in Tyler's class if I go to stream I get to see this attachment before it wasn't like that and so students sometimes if I go back and just do what he had which was so condensed notifications my students actually have to take the time you see, all the attachments are hidden under there but now what I have to do is it's going to show me where the attachment is so now I'm going to go over to my class I'm going to go to my class work page and it's not showing here but in the strain I have to be able to click on this to find the attachment and so it's important to me in settings that I make it as easy as I can for my students so I show attachments in this  so it's a preference you don't have to do that some teachers hide all of the notifications and that means it forces the student to go to the classroom tab so it's it's options the other thing is I always keep this turned off because if I die I don't want my students to see if I made a mistake or deleted you can also invite Guardians and it can show us a sample of maybe what it looks like and says if you if you click on the it'll explain it all to you but really what it does is it list out a a summary week by week or by day of what's going on in your Google classroom and that's good for parents to be able to see one of the new things with Google me is you can turn on and off your Google link for Google meet you can generate a meet and let me see what that looks like in the header like we've been able to join the Going the Distance class we can click right here and this is a good option but it's also something that you need to make sure you're the last person out of the meeting cuz it's not the students can get in there and do they want so you got to make sure that you are in control of that as well and you can also turn off the Google link right here so that you don't have to worry about it and the grading calculation I don't I don't worry is this a lot because I like to be able to have control of the grades before my students see them but you can turn on all of this and has the grade that the student season Google classroom may not match the gray that you have in powerteacher May complain this is why I thought I had a b in this class cuz that's what Google Classroom says and and you'll have to explain that headache over and over tile parents and students so badly that turned off when they can I show them a guardian weekly summary I pulled one up okay so want to make sure that you understand that when you invite a guardian to Google Classroom you're not actually inviting them into the Google Classroom we don't let parents in Google Classroom now they make get their child's password and and get in there and look around and and whatever we can't prevent them from getting that but we don't actually invite them to be in the class. That would be there be safety concerns with that but this is what they get weekly in their email I get a list of all the students missed work what's due next week from the different classes that the students in all in the same school so they get one email for the whole school I'm not one of your helper teacher but one email for the whole school of everything that's going on in Google classroom with their child and they can under settings right here they can change. The daily what's that quote blocks a mistake to Sharon wants to know when transferring brace from Google Classroom teacher does that Leeton to be on in order to do that function so that's kind of a complicated question if you're going to push your grades yes is the answer but not from Google forms for sharing if you're going to assess from Google form then you can skip over the classroom and still have control of your Gray's like Tyler's tested you don't want the parents to be able to see your grades what if you want to curb that part of the test 10 points or what if you want to say oh I messed up and I might add three points every buddy so you want to make sure that you don't know the grade until you're really ready for it to be the final grade is changing grades is always a bad idea so you either you just want to make sure that you had that done that's the question and I think I answered it right Tyler so that's under an individual class settings before we go on I'll let I'll let Linda show you how to make an assignment in a Grade like on this handout right here and and talk about setting a due date and making a copy for student but before we Wanda. I want to show you one more settings place it's not up here in the gearbox but it's over here I go back to my dashboard and show all my classes and I go back one more time to the main menu but here in the left-hand Corner this is where you can you find the settings for all of Google classroom and this is really important that teachers that are getting too many emails in their inbox from Google classroom you won't believe how many emails you will get from student turning in work late work resubmitting and all that you can print those off and adjust them as needed no I've got them all turned on but Adam turned off for certain classes I don't want to get notified every time something happens in My Demo Healthcare 101 class so I've got that turned off but I do want to know whenever somebody post something in this test coordinators class that I set up so I get email notifications from that and what email notifications do I get all of these all these that I have checked so let me show you one more time how to find that so I'm not I'm at the dashboard I go over lyrics to the main menu open that up and scroll all the way down to the bottom and click on settings and that's where you can change your email notifications component and buy class Nelson this area over here that I was going to tell you why don't you show them just pick a class and when you're finished with your class you can archive the class so he goes back to the dashboard for a second there's two really Fat Tuesday chicken Chong on the dashboard not that you really want to Archive but maybe you know this one okay if you go to the three dots there and click on it there's actually a couple of things you can archive it you can copy a class you can the settings of the name of the class or you can move it so if he chooses to Archive it what that means is students don't have access to be able to edit or just anything anymore they can't submit work they can't do anything with it they also can't share that work with another student and that's important because when first semester is over I don't want my first semester will Tyler tour committed and give all of his information to girlfriend Tanya and she don't have to do anything so you want to make sure that you don't you don't you know they still need to do that but you got to make it a little more challenging for them to do so definitely archiving is a good idea if you want how to get it back if they archive something back so you can go to archived in the three. Go all the way down to Archive and then you can worry you can unarchive any class you want so the one that he just did you can just restore and then it pops populates right back into your dashboard of classroom there it is right there yeah so there's two more things Tyler we should point out number one is Tyler wanted to put his classes in order is a drag-and-drop feature he can just grab driver grabbed and dragged one of them until to me that's important because I want all of the classes that I'm a teacher in all of us archery classes Going the Distance classes I want them organized so that I can kind of keep up and said that's a very positive thing to do and it's Tyler was the click on maybe a class maybe one of the Going the Distance classes if you look at the little folder right there if you click on the folder so I tell her if you click on the folder at the dashboard then that's going to take you to the classroom folder and snow what that I did it's going to show him all of the assignment that's been populated in that class and that's a very good to have as well it's like a short tired of having to go to drive and then from flashing folder and then if you've been using Google Play for a while I have a whole lot of Boulders in my classroom classroom folder in Google Drive shortcut you should know couple things anytime a student Aaron's in something in Google Drive it automatically puts their name on the title of that document so you don't have to guess who's document that is a very useful and Google Classroom when it why don't you tell them why you have all these numbers on your assignments so if so if you go toward can I take a screen for a second and Sharon I'm not sure what your question is what what are you doing the distance distance classes number for so I'm doing those now for those people that didn't take the class over the summer and we all we kind of got all mixed up with the naming of them so it's really the same class as you too it's just called I don't know why we call it I don't know that happened but let me see missing something you say that okay you didn't do it through this number so wears number 4 so I want and actually tell her if I can just take a second I'm going to go down to one of my archived geometry classes can you see my screen so I'm going to just pick I just try this one so I'm just going to restore this one for a second and you'll notice that I have taken out my students so that none of my students can share their geometry work with other students and I I like that because it's important to me that they do that so if I click on this actually this is the wrong class that that's okay if you go to class word one of the things that I like so much about this yes I organized by units so like this is this is actually this year when we left in March but you'll notice that everything is numbered for the and the reason that it's numbered is the I can go right here to my class drive folder and it is amazing Tyler has his like sorted and I have my little icon so I wanted to show you 001 this is the first activity the bitmoji activity I have a summit number 18 Less Than 3 I mean unit 3 lesson 8 and then the title and everything is nicely sequential so that the students know exactly what and if I were to click on one do you spell there's I can see my student work so you can look at so we got to do assignment 59 before March whatever we we didn't we stop going to school but it's a great way to or what you're going to find I think this was my really small class but you'll see that I have student names of my other lessons that they turned in and then you'll see that it is put the name of them right here and I'm going to show you all that in a minute as well I think tell her what else did I forget about that is that everything I think it is out if we follow along on that PDF document the next step is about making assignments in Google classroom and school it up now you're going to get this stream stream is more like an announcement it's not necessarily assignment and the class work is where your assignments are going to be and so what I'm going to do is I'm actually going to create an assignment click on this we have a lot about the first option is really the one that I used the most I'm going to click on the assignment and it's going to open up a menu of options for me and noticed that the only thing that is required is the title because this is grayed out I can't do anything with it until I post the assignments I'm going to say 0 0 or zero 12 is going to be I don't know what was a 0-60 maybe it's going to be my last time number and I'm going to type practice that's going to be the title of my lesson and what happens is as soon as you do the topic you see how this is sign button open and I have so many favorite things about Google classroom but as soon as you title something this is where I think about what I want my students to do so what I'm going to do is if you pulled them this menu bar I can save this as a draft I can also schedule it for my students or I can assign it right now now I want I have some other choices to make before I sign so I'm going to come over here and I'm just going to do some directions so there's my directions and I have a lot of options for what kind of assignment I want them to do so when I click on ADD I'm going to go to Google Drive I'm going to show you how to do a couple of days so I'm just going to grab Google extension that tell her and I just taught and it is a slide deck and yell this is one of the most important features of classroom and it's so amazing students view the file that means they can look at it they can't share it they can't take it they can look at it the second one says students can edit the file that means if I want groups of students to be a work on the same document or in our class Going the Distance I had is it is it Session 9 Tyler where we do collaborative so yeah we're going to do with collaborative slides or or activities that you want the students be able to work on together this auction gives every student editable rights to your work or to your file this is the most common make a copy for each student that means every student in this class is going to get a copy of this slide deck and they can edit it as as their own so nobody can see anybody else's work and that's a very powerful thing to me I could also go over here I actually added something from Google Drive but if you wanted to do a Google alarm I put my forms right here in with the length and so I would just copy and paste the link in Google forms and and click add I could also add an attachment so if I wanted to Adam attachment like a PDF or some kind of instructions I can do that and I can also had a YouTube yeah I don't use the YouTube feature I am dead my own YouTube so students don't actually go to the YouTube site over here this is another one of my favorite things so I can drop this assignment to all of my classes if I want it or I can drop it to just one class and that's a very nice teacher if you teach multiple sections of geometry but I also want to let you know that while you select one class notice what happens here and I picked the wrong class cuz I know student shell but normally there would be a list of student so let me let me do this with student so I can show you all so I'm just going to pick one of the Going the Distance classes and I'm going to go to class work how to go to create how many go to assignment we're going to pretend all of that's already done but when I go over here actually I think I probably have to put Instagram when I go over here if I select more than one notice that this button gets grayed out so I don't get the option isn't either or function if I want to do just one class then all the sudden this gets turned back and this is an amazing tool differentiate so these are all the people in the Going the Distance class morning class I think I don't want to send it to everybody I want to send it to Allison and Amanda and Amy and that's yet so I can differentiate its those are the students that need to work on one particular task I can give some of the other students a different assignment and that's a very powerful tool and nobody knows what I've given any student so this is very nice you can do all students you can do know soon as you can select whichever students you want but you can't free do more than one class then you can choose a hundred or ungraded if you wanted to be graded you can choose the day and the time so we're going to make this do Saturday night at midnight and I can choose the topic now y'all this is an amazing tool to remember how in my class I had all those units done that I've learned this summer in the distance is I make my topics all capital letters and when I do that it stands out in in the class workstream A lot and then I can you know like if I selected my topic and we can talk about the rubric but there's a whole rubric function as well if I go to this I can schedule it I can save it and I'm just going to save this to show you what happened then noticed it was in session one so you see how much topics right here or Boulder then just normal letters the capital make it stand out a little bit so I'm in session one and you see how these are highlighted and this one's greyed out this means that the students can't see this until I'm ready for them to see it so what I choose to do is like on Monday morning I go in and I lay out all everything I want to do that we'd so that way I'm not constantly trying to sign things and I pre think that I leave it in and when I'm ready I just ad and then I can just go up and hit a sign so what did I leave out Tyler with assignment just a tip about if you have a if you want to sign your students a Google form don't create here show nut button where you create a Google form inside a Google Classroom don't do it here or what she's about to say sorry so right here this is a bad idea y'all don't do the quiz assignment because if you do the quiz assignment you see how it's creating a blank quiz that means you don't have control over the knee gray before it's Google and that's that because you don't you don't want students to see if that's not what you really want to do so you want to give yourself that option that's I don't ever do that Linda Shield build her quiz her Google form in Google Drive first then she'll come back here to the classwork and attach it to the assignment let's say that I decided that I want to change things I'm actually going to delete that drop cuz I don't want it in there and I can easily do that but let's say that I want this in in numeric order and it is you know ascending order but if I did if I wanted to change it it's just a I can draw and I know you think that somebody might think well that's not really important it's just three little things but if I if you really do the units like I was doing in my geometry class it really does matter because I always make it by due date so mine is always labeled by due date which is very convenient for the students which brings me to ask course so the next thing yes I'm here in the Stream students can see their upcoming assignments which is really cool because the sometimes the students don't know if there's some they've already turned it in or if they haven't turned it in and so you can look right here and it'll take you to exactly the assignment I'm right here now I'm in the teacher perspective but it'll take you to the assignment of how you want that done the other thing is I can also from the teacher perspective go to the people Tab and I'm going to pick on Tyler who's Bears 6:17 and I'm going to look to see what work he's turned in and then he is doing that very good in my class he missing almost every missing every single assignment but how awesome is that for the teacher if I get if I get a call from his dad saying okay look what's missing and I can click right here and I generate this list and I've actually screenshotted this and been able to send it to the to the parent and it saves me from having to write it all down or I can say well he doesn't have anything Dan but if he did have something turned in I can also show everything that has been turned in the missing tab is my favorite right here because I don't have to write down everything I can just screenshot it and send it to the parents could you print this page in the in the Chrome taking it to parent conferences but you know I'm so not into paper Tyler I just bring blood and then I just screenshot it and send it to them for Google Voice or something but I do very nice to be able to show the parent what the students missing and what they still have to work on Tyler pause here if y'all have any questions we can answer now or we can go into the gray book and Google Classroom it's want to talk about grading and assignment but if y'all have questions you can either on Meacham I can ask it or put it in the chat box it's up to you though here and I don't have actually movie so I can go right here I'm going to Drive I know exactly that document is because I organize my Google Drive but if you didn't know where it is you know then you can go to your phone if you can go to drive and find it here it is right them to be able to have their very own copy of it and then I would go through and I would send it to date tomorrow at midnight I'm going to choose a quadratic equations and then I can choose to you no you go here and it's going to be right here so am I seeing as click on it they get to see this practice and they can open it so one of my students individually you want to make a copy wouldn't okay thank you I was overthinking it I guess because it wasn't a Google slide but it's cuz I never really work with sheets before so I guess I think I was overthinking it. I started using them this past fall we were in school and so I'm kind of new to it too but she's drawing slides the only thing they don't make a copy of is for everything. but you want to give your kids you want to make a copy for if you want them to be able to edit it so any other questions thank you StudentVue and the students going to do the assignment that you just did one. So I'm going to click on my Sonic hear conditional formatting in there I see the spreadsheet that it's done now I could click turn it in not doing anything in that would just give Linda a spreadsheet with nothing completed on it now she'll give me a 0 when she opens it up and looks at it but I'm going to go ahead and open it right now and I'm going to is Tyler click out of what like click to backspace on Thursday Yahoo answers in what if you just clear that out there you go you know one thing that North Point Outlet hours on this on the screen all the green share button the share button for my student is completely off-limits they are not allowed to share anything with me they have to submit through Google class because if a student learns about that stare but that's all they're going to they're going to share everything with you and that's not what you want because being there's no organization all that nice classroom organization of 0010 now say don't I don't let my kids use the share button at all sorry Tyler talking about like if they were to share it with me. I would be getting an email call saying that this student Tyler torok has shared with you his his spreadsheet but we don't want it in email we just want the student to get used to closing the tab and then coming back to this time and hitting turned in and it automatically saves any answers that the student changed on the document and turns it in and shows it that it that it submitted to the teacher so now I'm going to give it back Linda and I'm going to let you go it in the Gradebook okay one thing that you should mention that we should talk about is while Tyler the student had that document he gets to edit the document completely but the moment that he just back to me it's Tyler were to try to open that document it would not let him it would say to him you don't have editing rights because he's turned it in and that's an important thing for this for the students to realize because they edit you they can't work on the assignment after the due date in other words so now if I look here you see how this is checking up on my screen so you see how this is chain this is now have one state and that's turned it in so from the student perspective mean from the teacher perspective I can go with you then I can look at the teacher I mean from the teacher perspective I can look at this dude I can stay or I can say or I can say try again or whatever and then you can also give him a gray so he's going to get a hundred and now I can post now posting it doesn't return it to the student you see those are two different options so Tyler is going to see the good job that I've done but I also have to return it to my suit now when I return it you get to decide so nail Tyler gets the document back and he can look at his grade and adjusted when it is in the teacher when it's been great if the student Noah has the ability to edit the document which is a very good thing for for Google Classroom to do Sharon wants to know Tyler why can't we get a student view like you have and I'm going to answer that for Tyler because Tyler is special and he gets to be in charge of us so here we go get that so we gave her way there there's a that would make whoever is using that it would be anonymous to who is using it and then if for some heaven forbid it failed the username and password fell into the wrong hands and then we got someone running around doing bad stuff and we don't know who it is so we're very limited with handed out accounts that are fake work around for being jealous protect from Tyler teacher and I did at the high school when I was first learning Google very important to be able to see the student perspective so she and I became a student in her class she was the teacher and vice the we had fake Google classrooms and I was a teacher and one the student in the other and she was also so we would actually drop each other's lessons so that he kind of see how it works and that's a really important that's a good lesson for the teacher today because then you don't make mistakes of telling the student are you can see that or you can't see that and you know we did that for about the first three or four weeks of that semester and they were like okay we got it we don't need to do that anymore that's a great tip and why don't you show them once you drop it in your practice class why don't you show them how to reuse an assignment that you've already signed in the practice class to the real class yeah that's a great idea so let me see what I do here wait did I just unfair okay let's see I'm going to go to this classroom I'm going to go to my class work and this is a new tool for me for this reuse so this reuse post right here me I can go to any of my classes and I'm just going to steal this class and I'm going to go ahead and one of the I'm going to do the feedback form or whatever and I hit reused actually I should have chosen that one but okay so y'all my directions my emojis that I have up here or my little clipart I can go in and if I want to change the number of assignment I can leave the directions the same if I want to chat attachment I can do that I everything is editable here I can change anything I want to and as I do that is super cool to be able to reuse the post let me show you that again so yeah right here I'm going to go to reuse and I can choose to if I want to keep it exactly the same I can just go to reuse if I'm sure that it's that I don't want to change anything and did you see the sign that easy so everything is right there for the students be able to see that says super cool fast way especially if you set up your classes and she's ashamed to say this that reuse I've only started doing since Going the Distance classes because I'm posting so much and all of the different classes that is been a great time-saver for me and then I can go over here and I can discard draft if I want to and then somewhere down here I can like I put this in Tyler's class and I can delete it if I want to or whatever the ReUse post is a good idea can I show one more thing Tyler yeah but then before we go in we're almost at the end of at 4th but I do want you to show them how to take your gray book and download it to a spreadsheet so you can import it or take it the power teacher so where did you go right here we are going to go to things no I think Nate Tyler wait a minute thank click on it actual simont I think that's where you would do it does the title of the assignment I think you do it from here from here to go to the the gear icon up there in the right corner yeah you can copy all gray you can download all grades to a CSV or you can download this grade or these grades so I probably I think I do this one when I do this I don't really do this much but yeah I need a CSV to upload to powerteacher so if you decided to do that you can do that I have to tell you Tyler this is a great teacher as a teacher I like to be able to see what my kids are all at once please touch the student grade C- pulling of what to do when you're right you're right how's my son doing I want to know the I started to do this and I did it for a couple of weeks and I decided I I need to be the teacher that knows exactly how each kid is doing I mean I can do it I know how to do it but I choose not to because I like to be able to see the like to see what it looks like in Google Sheets it hit the first one just take a look at it not if I'm not encouraging it we're just taking a look at how nice it looks very nice is very nicely populated there's a lot of cool things that you can do with it and you can also take this then can't you download this to CSV $2 at one of the options was the download it to CSV yeah you know actually you could actually do this and then I can look at all my grades at its I just like to be able to see you I don't know what's the chicken project Eliza paradox chicken and it had chicken in the Thousand Islands on so let's see what else and you know this is where the class but you can also go in if you look at their hold on go to student work and if I look right here and if Tyler were to say something back if you see where I put great job teller can communicate back and forth with play about this play with the student has a question I teach my students to put it in private comments and I go in and answer those questions as well
