Attendance

Regular school attendance is a fundamental component of student success in BCPS. Building strong attendance habits early—from elementary through middle and high school—sets the foundation for academic achievement and long-term success. Students who attend school consistently are significantly more likely to graduate fully prepared for college, careers, and life.

Conversely, frequent absences—whether excused or unexcused—put students at risk of falling behind academically and missing vital social-emotional development that fosters accountability and engagement. Chronic absenteeism severely hinders a student's path toward graduation and is a leading indicator of school dropout.

At BCPS, we believe every school day counts. Our mission is to build strong, trusting partnerships between schools and families to address attendance challenges early, celebrate regular attendance, and ensure every student feels connected, supported, and motivated to attend school every day.

Under Georgia Code § 20-2-690.1, Georgia’s Compulsory School Attendance Law mandates that every parent, guardian, or person having control of a child between their 6th and 16th birthdays must enroll and regularly send that child to a public school, private school, or an approved home study program.
