BCPS ID Badge Policy
Burke County Public Schools Staff Identification Badge Policy
Purpose
This policy establishes guidelines for the issuance, display, and use of staff identification badges to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. Badges are issued to personnel by the Assistant Principal of Operations of the school, for the duration of the school year. Retention of the badges during the summer must be approved. It is the individual’s responsibility to maintain possession of his/her badge and/or school keys.
Scope
This policy applies to all BCPS staff and personnel (K-12), including but not limited to:
- Administrators
- Teachers
- Support Staff
- Custodial Staff
- School Nutrition Staff
- Contractors
- Substitute Teachers / Student Teachers
- Volunteers
Badge Requirements
Issuance
1. All staff members must complete required background checks before receiving an ID badge
2. Badges will be issued by the Human Resources Department
3. Staff must present government-issued photo identification to receive their badge
4. Temporary badges will be issued to substitute teachers and short-term visitors
5. First badge is issued at no cost; replacement fees apply for lost/damaged badges
Display
1. Badges must be worn and visible at all times while on school property
2. Badges must be worn above the waist on the outermost layer of clothing
3. Badges must be worn on a school-issued lanyard or clip
4. Badge photos must be clearly visible and not obscured
5. Temporary badges must be returned to the main office at the end of each day
Badge Information
Each badge will display:
1. Staff member's photo
2. Full name
3. Job title/position
4. Department/School assignment
5. Employee ID number (if applicable)
6. District/School logo
7. Expiration date (if applicable)
Compliance and Enforcement
Staff Responsibilities
1. Report lost or stolen badges immediately to administration and/or Security Office
2. Never loan badges to others (students or other personnel) for any reason.
3. Never duplicate badges
4. Return badges upon termination of employment
5. Maintain badge in good condition
Administrative Actions
1. Staff without badges must obtain temporary identification from main office
2. Repeated failure to display badges and/or non-compliance with this policy may result in disciplinary action
3. Intentional misuse of badges will result in disciplinary action
4. Lost/stolen badges will be deactivated immediately
Lost/Damaged Badge Procedures
1. If a badge is lost, damaged, or stolen, the employee must notify the school or district administration
2. Complete the BCPS ID Badge Request Form
3. Pay replacement fee ($50) to Office Manager (School Location) and/or to District Administrative Secretary Kelly Quick
4. Visit HR Department for new photo if needed
5. Return damaged badge when receiving replacement
Special Circumstances
1. Accommodations for religious or medical needs must be approved by HR
2. Temporary exemptions must be documented and approved
3. Alternative identification methods must be approved by Administration
Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as needed to ensure effectiveness and compliance with current security standards.
Emergency Procedures
In the event of a school emergency or lockdown:
1. All badge verification procedures remain in effect
2. Emergency responders will be provided expedited access
Contractor and Visitor Badges
1. Different color/design from staff badges
2. Clearly marked as "CONTRACTOR" or "VISITOR"
3. Must be signed in/out daily
4. Limited access permissions
5. Expiration date clearly displayed
